MOTION CALLING ON THE KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT TO RECRUIT AND DEPLOY TEACHERS TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN IJUMU CONSTITUENCY
The Rt. Hon. Speaker, my Distinguished Honourable Colleagues, this motion is critical to the future of our children, and I urge this Honourable House to note that education remains the bedrock of any meaningful development. It is the single most powerful tool that can lift individuals, families and entire communities out of poverty. When a society invests in education, it invests in progress, peace and prosperity.
Mr. Speaker, under the focused and people-oriented leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the present administration has shown genuine commitment to repositioning the education sector through various reforms, interventions and infrastructural improvements. This motion, therefore, seeks to complement the ongoing efforts of the present administration by drawing attention to a pressing issue in Ijumu Constituency that requires timely intervention.
Mr. Speaker, during my recent visits to a number of primary schools in my constituency, I had the opportunity to observe the realities on the ground. In several schools, a few dedicated teachers are managing multiple classes with remarkable commitment and resilience. In some others, volunteer staff and NYSC members have stepped in to support teaching efforts, ensuring that learning continues despite existing manpower gaps.
While these efforts are commendable, it is clear that additional support would further strengthen the delivery of quality education in the area. With improved staffing and provision of basic learning materials, our pupils will be better positioned to develop strong foundations in literacy – reading and writing skills, numeracy – mathematical literacy and civic awareness, skills that are essential for shaping responsible, productive citizens in the future.
Mr. Speaker, our teachers remain the backbone of our educational system. Many of them continue to give their best despite limited resources and challenging conditions. Providing them with adequate support, incentives and a more conducive teaching environment will not only improve learning outcomes but also reinforce the commendable strides the present administration is already making in revitalizing the education sector.
Beyond these observations, Mr. Speaker, this Honourable House has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to education, welfare and human development. Supporting this motion will not only reaffirm that noble commitment but also complement the commendable efforts of the present administration under His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, to strengthen education as the key pillar of Kogi State’s sustainable development agenda.
PRAYERS
Be it, therefore, resolved as follows:
1. That the State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, be commended for its ongoing reforms in the education sector and further urged to prioritize the urgent recruitment and deployment of qualified teachers to primary schools across Ijumu Constituency and, by extension, other parts of Kogi State to address the acute shortage in public primary schools.
2. That an appeal be made urging the State Government to identify and redeploy teachers who were transferred from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) or the State Senior Secondary School Board to other establishments, Ministries, Departments, Agencies or Local Government Councils, back to the classroom where their services are most needed.
3. That the State Government be encouraged to sustain and strengthen the ongoing review of teachers’ welfare by providing a conducive teaching and learning environment – including well-equipped classrooms, modern instructional materials, and recreational facilities – to foster quality education and holistic child development.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker and my Distinguished Honourable Colleagues.
I so moved.
