The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, has announced a series of reforms aimed at strengthening the institution’s inaugural lecture tradition, as the university hosted its 40th Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday.

The significant event, the first under Ibileye’s leadership, brought together academics, students, and stakeholders, which showcased a renewed commitment to discipline, quality, and institutional growth.

In his address, Prof. Gbenga Ibileye described the inaugural lecture as a core academic tradition that goes beyond ceremonial presentation. He said the platform serves as a space where scholarship is rigorously examined and preserved for the benefit of both the university community and the wider society.

Reflecting on the institution’s journey, Ibileye noted that the progression from the sixth to the 40th inaugural lecture represents more than numerical expansion.

He explained that it reflects continuity, discipline, and a deliberate effort to build a strong academic culture over time.

Ibileye acknowledged that in the early years, the university community was still learning the process, sometimes during the lectures themselves.

However, he stressed that the institution has since developed a clearer understanding of the need for structure, purpose, and coordination in delivering high quality academic engagements.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve standards, the Vice Chancellor announced plans to reposition the Inaugural Lecture Committee to ensure better coordination and alignment with global best practices.

He also revealed that the university will review lecture timing and venues to enhance participation and overall experience.

Prof. Ibileye emphasized the importance of time management, warning against prolonged sessions that reduce the effectiveness of academic presentations.

He stated that inaugural lectures must remain focused and well structured, rather than evolving into extended events.

Furthermore, he stressed that quality will remain the central focus of the lecture series. According to him, each inaugural lecture must demonstrate depth, coherence, and a meaningful contribution to knowledge, as the university seeks to strengthen its intellectual identity.

Meanwhile, the Inaugural Lecturer, Professor Sunday Obomeviekome Imoni, delivered a compelling lecture titled, “Waves to Wisdom: Progress in Numerical Methods for Oscillatory Systems.”

In his lecture, Imoni explored the role of numerical methods in solving complex problems associated with oscillatory systems, which are common in fields such as engineering, physics, and medicine. He highlighted how advanced mathematical techniques improve accuracy, stability, and efficiency in handling complex differential equations.

He also demonstrated the real-world relevance of numerical analysis, explaining its application in areas ranging from structural engineering to space exploration. His presentation positioned mathematics as a practical tool that drives innovation and supports technological advancement.
