The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has called for greater attention to health education in schools, describing it as just as important as English Language and Mathematics in shaping the future of Nigerian children.

Speaking at the Kids Dialogue Series in Abuja, themed “Empowering Young Voices to Shape Health, Learning and Well-being in Nigeria,” the Minister said healthy children are better learners and future leaders, stressing that good health remains the foundation for a productive life.

Dr. Alausa urged students to embrace healthy habits, including proper hygiene, good nutrition and regular immunization, noting that vaccines protect against diseases such as polio, measles, rubella and even some forms of cancer.

Answering questions from students, the Minister maintained that health education deserves equal attention with core academic subjects because children cannot achieve their educational goals without good health.

He encouraged young people to take responsibility for their well-being by asking parents and teachers about their vaccination status and seeking guidance on healthy living.

The Minister also addressed mental health concerns, advising children experiencing stress, anxiety, trauma or depression to speak with parents, teachers, counsellors or other trusted adults.

On inclusive education, Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting children with disabilities through improved access to learning facilities and specialized educational services.

Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Muyi Aina, urged students to become health champions by promoting healthy behaviours and encouraging their peers to stay up-to-date with immunizations.

Dr. Aina also cautioned against misinformation about vaccines, emphasizing that immunization remains one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent life-threatening diseases.

The dialogue brought together students, educators, health professionals and development partners in a shared effort to promote healthier lifestyles and improve learning outcomes for children across Nigeria.
