Kogi Environment Commissioner Visits Gully Erosion Site at Zango, Warns Against Building on Water Channels

Kogi State Government on Monday warned residents against building on water channels to avoid lost of lives and property occasioned by flooding.
The Commissioner of Environment, Chief Victor Adewale Omofaiye gave the warning during an on-the-spot assessment of Houses washed by heavy rains in Zango-Daji, Adavi Local Government.
Chief Omofaiye noted that problems of ecological problems would have been easily surmountable if the people avoid building along waterways.
 He noted that the havoc caused by the flood was as a result of lack of adequate planning as well as disregard to town planning law.
The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Project Coordinator of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, Barr. Ladi Jatto, however assured people of Zango Daji Community of government support to stem the challenge.
He noted that the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello directed them to visit the scene upon receiving the report of the flood.
Chief Omofaiye thanked the residents of the community to the New Direction Administration and urged them to sustain same.
Leader of the Community, Mr. Musa Yahaya thanked the Commissioner and his entourage for the quick response, describing it as a show of concern to the plight of the people, adding that the flood has destroyed houses as roads in the community has been washed away due to heavy rains.
