The Sanity Multi-Efforts Forum (SMEF), in pursuit of promoting peace and stability in Nigeria’s labour sector, has reiterated its call for respect for the rule of law in the ongoing National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leadership crisis.
This follows recent developments in the dispute between MC Oluomo and Tajudeen Baruwa, who both claim to be the legitimate president of the union.
In a statement, SMEF President, Prince Dan Olaitan Dada noted MC Oluomo’s explanation for not resisting the takeover of the NURTW national secretariat by Baruwa’s faction, citing that he wasn’t a defendant in the court judgment and has appealed the ruling with a stay of execution secured. SMEF stresses that security agencies’ intervention should prioritize peace and stability, aligning with our objective of promoting a culture of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“We urge both factions to resolve disputes through legal channels, avoiding actions that could escalate tensions,” SMEF stated.
The forum emphasizes that adherence to judicial processes will ensure a peaceful resolution to the crisis, reflecting SMEF’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting stability in Nigeria’s labour movement.
SMEF commends the NURTW for demonstrating maturity in handling the leadership crisis. This shift from past violent tendencies to embracing legal processes is a welcome development. We encourage both factions to maintain this level of maturity, ensuring the union’s operations align with the law and promoting stability in Nigeria’s labour movement.
The statement highlights SMEF’s confidence in the NURTW’s ability to manage its affairs in line with the law, marking a positive turn for the union’s image and Nigeria’s labour sector.
