Anglican Church Urges F.G to Declare State of Emergency on Security, University Education

The Federal government has been called upon to without further delay, declare State of Emergency on the insecurity challenges ravaging the country.

The call is contained in a Communique issued at the 3rd Session of the 4th Synod of the Diocese of Ijumu, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion held at the Emmanuel Anglican Church, Iyara, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The Communique which was signed by Rt Revd Dr Paul Olarewaju Ojo, the Diocesan Bishop, observed with dismay the deteriorating security situation of the nation particularly the destructive activities of Boko haram, Bandits and the incessant farmer/Herders clashes which have limited food security in the country.

According to the Communique, the ugly security challenges is solely responsible for the increase in the prices of food and other essential commodities of life.

On the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Communique therefore encouraged the Federal Government and ASUU to amicably resolve their grievances and reopen Universities for a sincerely serious academic works.

“Synod noticed in utter dismay the incessant ASUU strikes and the negative impact on the life of our youth now and in the future. Synod therefore encourage the Government and ASUU to amicably resolve their grievances and re open our Universities for a sincerely serious academic works.

The Communique pointed out that “the economy of Ijumu Local Government is highly ill affected by the lack of industrialization and agro allied products which are in abundant supply everywhere in Okunland particularly in Ijumu land.”

It enjoined all sons and daughters of Okunland to come home and invest in the agricultural and industrial sectors so as to create jobs for youth.

The Anglican Diocese raised an alarm over the high level of indebtedness by government.

“Synod observed the alarming national debt which is highly unacceptable as it affects the spending capacity of our people and leaves them trapped in perpetual poverty and therefore advise the Federal Government to look onward and source for an alternative means of funding its budget and other financial demands rather than going on loan all the time.”

The Communique called on all Christians in Okunland in particular and Nigeria as a whole to rise up in prayers without ceasing for God to intervene in the affairs of Okunland and Nigeria as a whole.
