Avoid “Japa,” Don’t Be Lazy, Renowned Artist, Nike Okundaye to Nigerian Youths

Renowned Artist, Chief Nike Okundaye has urged Nigerian Youths to avoid living the country for greener pasture in other countries as the nation has all it takes to develop.

Chief Okundaye stated this during the Commissioning of the Nike Art Gallery Centre as well as establishment of Institute of African Heritage and Museum Studies and Ground Breaking of University Museum Project at the Federal University Lokoja.

The Renowned Artist said the nation, particularly Kogi State has all it takes to succeed and has no business with failure.

According to her, the “Japa Syndrome” must be avoided by the young generation if the nation must develop its potentials.

She stated that she embark on the Nike Art Gallery Project following the personal request of the State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for her to replicate her Artistry work in the State.

Chief Okundaye added that the Centre apart from attracting tourists to the University and the State, will provide employment for youths who are interested in Art.

In a message to the ceremony, Gov. Ododo represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, described the Nike Art Gallery as a major step toward preserving the culture and history of the people.

The Governor said the new Centre is more than just buildings, but a platform that will help young people understand their roots, history, and identity.

Gov. Ododo showered encomiums on the renowned artist and cultural icon, Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, describing her as a pride of Kogi State and Nigeria.

According to her, Chief Okundaye has spent decades promoting African art and culture across the world and empowering many young Nigerians with skills for self-reliance.

He said Education and culture are critical to the development of the State and country at large.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi stated that Chief Okundaye has done well for the University by embarking on the Project, and assured that her vision for the State will be sustained by his successor.

The Vice Chancellor explained that the art gallery and museum are products of collaboration between the university and the cultural icon.

According to Professor Akinwumi, the institute was named after Chief Okundaye in recognition of her lifelong commitment to the promotion of art, culture, and Nigeria’s heritage.

He added that the university is witnessing rapid development through partnerships, noting that the management decided to think outside the box by working closely with private organizations and individuals.

He also appreciated the Kogi State Government for its continued support and encouragement toward the growth of the university.
