Permit me to add my voice to several commendations that have trailed the recent closure of Zango Markets in Iyara and Kabba. No doubt, this is a bold and commendable move by the Chairmen of Ijumu and Kabba-Bunu Local Government Areas.
This decisive action demonstrates their commitment to prioritising the safety and security of their citizens.
The closure of these markets is a necessary measure to prevent further security threats and protect indigenes and passers-by across our communities.
The security challenges posed by these markets, if left unchecked, could have far-reaching consequences.
The Chairmen of Ijumu and Kabba-Bunu Local Government Areas have shown exemplary leadership by taking proactive steps to address these security concerns. Their swift action sends a strong message that the safety and well-being of their people will not be compromised.
As the markets remain closed, however, it is essential to put robust security measures in place to prevent future security threats and/or breaches. With the “type” of people that have been sent packing from the markets, authorities in the area have put fire on top of the roof and therefore, adequate steps must be taken if we have to sleep inside the house.
The following security measures are recommended:
1. Conducting thorough security assessments and risk analyses in respect of the closure. This could be done by a team of sincere and competent security officers, including vigilantes and hunters;
2. Adequate aerial and ground surveillance through the deployment of ICT and men;
3. Adequate deployment of security personnel to monitor not only the markets but also the general area linking the two local government areas with other local government areas and adjoining states; and
4. Engaging with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community opinion leaders and hunters.
The closure of Zango Markets in Iyara and Kabba serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to prioritise security and work collaboratively to prevent future threats. Once again, I commend the Chairmen of Ijumu and Kabba-Bunu Local Government Areas for their proactive leadership and commitment to ensuring the safety and security of their citizens.
I urge all stakeholders to work together to implement robust security measures and maintain a safe and secure environment for all.
