LG Chairman Orders Immediate Suspension of Mining activities in Kogi

The Executive Chairman of Ijumu Local Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna, has announced the immediate suspension of all mining activities within the Local Government Area.

This measure is intended to strengthen security oversight and ensure full compliance with regulatory standards.

In a statement issued from the Chairman’s office, he ordered the closure of all mining sites and directed that all illegal miners vacate the Local Government Area with immediate effect.

He emphasized that while illegal activities will no longer be tolerated, duly registered miners are required to report to the Local Government Secretariat with their certificates of registration and operational permits.

 

Additionally, they must identify and register the specific locations of their operations, including details of equipment and personnel under their supervision.

As a measure to strengthen Security oversight and ensure full compliance with regulatory standards, all mining activities within Ijumu LGA are hereby suspended.
Illegal miners will no longer have space for their illicit operations within the Local Government while Legal miners must also present their certificate of registration and permit to the Local Government for proper identification and registration of their work areas, equipment, and staff.

Given the current security challenges in surrounding areas, it is critical to monitor all activities within our communities and the surrounding forest areas.”

The Chairman further warned that any miner, legal or illegal, who fails to comply with these directives will face strict enforcement actions, including the impoundment of equipment by the Local Government.

 

He stressed that the government will not hesitate to seize machinery and shut down any site operating outside the approved guidelines.

 

In line with the Kogi State Government policy, the Chairman also issued a stern warning to traditional rulers and landowners against granting consent for mining operations without due consultation with the Local Government Authority. He emphasized that any such consent given without formal approval is null and void.

He concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the Local Government to the safety and well-being of its citizens:
“All hands are on deck to secure our environment and safeguard the welfare of our people. The government is working tirelessly to preserve peace and will not condone any act of sabotage.”
