In a bid to encourage Students in the study of Science, a Non Governmental Organization, Osaseyi Foundation has given scholarships to about 100 Senior Secondary School Students in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The Categories of the Scholarships include; Best Student in SS1, Best Student in SS2, Best Student in SS3, Best Science Student and Best Mathematics Student in each of the 20 Secondary Schools in the Local Government.
While the students went home with N10,000 each, 20 Teachers from the Schools were also given a cash donation of N50,000.
Speaking at the presentation of the Scholarship at Iyara, the Local Government Headquarters, the Programme Manager of the Foundation, Hon. Amodu Ibikunle said the scholarship was aimed at cushioning the effect of the economic hardship on parents and to enable the student get science related “educational consumables” that will enable them excel more the science subjects.
According to Hon. Ibikunle, the Foundation is also paying the school fess of the benefitting students in the forthcoming term, saying the gesture which is part of the belief of the Chairman of the Foundation, Chief Richard Osaseyi in imparting lives.
He pointed out that the N50, 000 cash for Teachers was part of the commitment of the Foundation to change the narrative of the popular saying that “the reward of Teacher is in Heaven,” saying teachers are meant to enjoy better welfare in view of their roles in developing the education sector.
My Boss, the Chairman of Osaseyi Foundation, Richard Osaseyi is passionate of promoting science in generally especially preparing the young generation to be inclined because that is where the world is heading to. Most of these students and poor and this is his way of alleviating their sufferings.
The Programme Manager charged the students and Teachers, who benefitted from the Scholarship as well as empowerment respectively to work hard and make their schools and Ijumu Kingdom proud.
Hon. Ibikunle while urging the students in particular to use the money for the purpose intended, said the money was meant for the students and not the school.
In a remark, the Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni, who was represented by the Olukoyi of Ikoyi, Oba Japhet Ohunenise lauded the initiative of the foundation, describing the empowerment for teachers as first of its kind in the history of the Local Government.
According to him, whoever gives to the needy would be blessed by God and commended the Chairman of the Foundation for his uncommon philanthropic gesture, saying the cash gift will add value to the lives of the beneficiaries.
The Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Wemi Jones, represented by the Director Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Salami Matthew urged other NGOs and well-to-do persons in the state to emulate the Osaseyi Foundation.
The Commissioner stated that the programme is in line with the School Adoption programme recently launched by the State Government and assured of the continued partnership of the Ministry with the NGO.
The Director Personnel Management, Ijumu Local Government, Chief Pedro Durotiwon described the Scholarship as the best thing to happen to Ijumu people, noting that the move is a step in the right direction.
Chief Durotiwon maintained that the Chairman of the Foundation is a Philanthropist per excellence who has emulated the good deeds of his father who during his life time connected has home town, Okoro Gbede to the National
One of the Students, Toluhi Damilola from Okoro Gbede High School said he was yet to pay for his NECO fee, saying the scholarship will go a long way in settling the payment.
Damilola thanked the Osaseyi Foundation for the gesture and prayed God to reward him.
