Over 18,000 Students in Public Secondary Schools in Kogi State are to write free Senior Secondary School Examination next year.
To this end, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has released over N600 million for the payment of WAEC for Students in Public Senior Secondary Schools across the State.
Briefing Newsmen on Tuesday in his office in Lokoja, Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones said the move was in line with the existing law on Free Examination in Public Schools assented to on 24th January this year by the immediate past Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello.
According to Hon. Jones, the the total number of the benefitting students are 3000 more than that of this year.
He explained that the figure indicates that parents are now moving their children to Public Schools, saying the free WAEC is part of the effort of the present administration to make life easier for parents at this current economic situation.
The Commissioner pointed out that the introduction of free Examination for public schools in the State was aimed at addressing our of school children.
He commended School Principals and Head Teachers that have supported the programme, saying stiffer measures awaits those that intend to frustrated the initiative.
Hon. Jones added that during this year’s free Examination exercise, Principals and Head Teachers, who were found extorting Students have been sanctioned accordingly.
He said every loopholes for inflating numbers of Students for application has been blocked, warning those with the intention to extort to be prepared to lose their jobs.
