The House of Representatives Committee on North East Development Commission (NEDC) on Thursday inspected the N13.55bn Jere Bowl road and the planned N1.5bn rehabilitation of Alau Dam project which served as the main source of drinking water to Maiduguri Metropolis and it environs.
Addressing journalists shortly after inspecting the construction of 22. 5 kilometers tarred roads, that cut across Ngowom-Koshebe-Galamari-Dusuman and Gongulong – Zabarmari – Khaddamari roads in Mafa and Jere LGAs, the Chairman of the commitee, Hon. Usman Zannah expressed satisfaction with the projects while stating that the roads will open up the area, enhance security and agricultural activities like irrigation, fishing and other businesses in the area.
“We also inspected the failed portion of the dyke, the Alau Dam which is the major source of drinking water to the Maiduguri metropolis and its environs, where a contract for the reconstruction was awarded to the tune of N1.5 billion” he said

The team who observed the level of destruction caused by Boko haram insurgents in the state commended NEDC for timely interventions while stating that the failed portion of the dam poses serious danger of flooding in Maiduguri town whenever the it overflows through the spillway.
Responding, the Managing director of NEDC, Mohammed Alkali stated that linking the roads became necessary as a result of the needs to help the affected communities harness their full agricultural potentials in order to boost food security in the region.
Alkali however reinstated commitment to the mandate of the organization, based on the areas of needs and priority so as to stabilize and develop the region.
