Panic broke out at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos State, in the early hours of Monday after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated under a parked vehicle, sending traders and residents into confusion and fear.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the situation was swiftly brought under control as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives were deployed to the scene and the entire area was immediately cordoned off to prevent further risk.
The Commissioner of Police explained that the device was allegedly placed under the passenger side of a vehicle and went off when the engine was started, causing a sudden explosion that disrupted the busy market environment.
Security operatives later swept through the market to rule out any additional threats. After a thorough search, authorities confirmed that no other explosive devices were discovered, helping to calm rising tension in the area.
One person was injured in the blast and rushed to the hospital, where medical officials say the victim is currently in stable condition.
The Baale of Oke Mushin, Mr. Tajudeen Faronbi, said he was alerted early in the morning and quickly contacted security agencies, prompting a rapid response from police operatives.
Armed officers were later stationed around the market to maintain order, while forensic experts recovered remnants of the device for investigation.
The police have urged residents and traders to remain calm and go about their normal activities, assuring that Lagos remains secure while investigations continue into the source of the explosion.
