As campaigns for the 2026 National Assembly elections officially kicked off today, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi Central Senatorial District is facing an apparent exodus of key stakeholders and members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
2027: Bello Tasks Okun Leaders On Unity, Predicts Landslide Win For Tinubu
The development became public today when a former leader of the PDP, Hon. Suberu Azamare Yakubu, paid a visit to former Governor Yahaya Bello. Azamare, who was regarded as a rallying point for the PDP in Kogi Central, said the party had lost its direction and electoral appeal.
According to him, the decision to move to the APC was driven by a desire to support Bello’s senatorial ambition and to acknowledge his contributions to the people of Ebiraland.
“I want to say to you, Your Excellency, that we have resolved to move into the APC and support your senatorial ambition. I feel great and proud today as an Anebira because of the political liberation and development you fought for Ebira. Your Excellency, there is nobody in Kogi Central today who will beat his chest to vote against you. Your senatorial election is a referendum for the people of Ebiraland to appreciate you for what you have done for us. Today, our people can sleep with their eyes closed. Businesses are booming in Kogi Central today, all because we have peace and security,” he said.
Azamare further assured Bello that other PDP groups in the area would follow suit and join the APC in the days ahead.
Responding, former Governor Yahaya Bello, CON, thanked Azamare for the gesture and assured him that the APC would provide a level playing field for all new members. He added that former PDP members joining the party would be welcomed and given equal opportunities to participate in its activities.
Hon. Azamare, a Kogi Central constituent who petitioned the President of the Senate on behalf of the Kogi Central Senator in the 10th Assembly — after the Senator’s initial self-submitted petition faced procedural pushback — disclosed that members of the PDP in Kogi Central had resolved to join the APC and support the senatorial bid of former Governor Yahaya Bello.
