The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has been suspended by the university’s Governing Council following allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by a senior university official, Engr. Folasade Adebayo.

The suspension was announced in a statement released Monday by the university’s Registrar, Mufutau A. Ibrahim, who also serves as Secretary to the Governing Council.

According to the statement, the Council met in an emergency virtual session on April 14, 2025, where it approved Prof. Fasina’s request to proceed on six months of accumulated Annual and Research Leave—amounting to 126 working days out of his total 228-day entitlement—effective immediately.

In his absence, Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and the most senior among the university’s three DVCs, has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for the next six months.

This development follows a wave of criticism over the Council’s initial handling of the allegations. Sources say the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, was “very angry” upon learning the Council had reportedly dismissed the complaint and asked the victim to apologise to the Vice-Chancellor.

Reacting to the minister’s outrage, the Council’s Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), quickly convened the emergency meeting where members resolved to suspend Prof. Fasina. However, the VC is said to have appealed to proceed on leave instead of facing a formal suspension.

Prof. Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, a Professor of Soil Science, will now steer the affairs of the university in acting capacity.
