The Executive Chairman of Kogi State Science Technical Education and Teaching Service Commission (STETSCOM), Mrs. Cecilia Cook on Tuesday announced a scholarship for a JS1 Student of Local Government Secondary School Otu-Egunbe, Kabba-Bunu Local Government after coming first in the 1500m race.
Mrs. Cook announced this at the 3rd Edition of GYB2PYB Athletics Fiesta held at the confluence Stadium Lokoja.
The 10yr old Olorunyomi Gift became the best youngest athlete at the competition after running round the tract four times in a short time.
Moved by her performance, the STETSCOM Boss announced 1 year scholarship for the young girl and commended her determination to win the race.
She used the occasion to restate the commitment of the Commission to development of Grassroots Sport.
According to the Executive Chairman, Sports is key to taking youths of the street, saying it is a viable tool to engaging the young generation meaningfully.
She noted that only adequate investment in school sports will bring an end to the insecurity challenges bedeviling the country and cyber crimes.
Mrs. Cook explained that the event was organised to canvass support for the Presidential bid of the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and to promote sport in schools in the state.
The Commissioner of Youths and Sport Development, Idris Musa commended the Commission for demonstrating passion for developing sporting activities at the grassroots level.
Musa charged the Commission to do everything humanly possible to improve such athletic competitions in Kogi Secondary Schools.
On his part, the State Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Comrade Ranti Ojo identified Sports Development as Panacea to Unemployment and National Unity.
Comrade Ojo called for better funding of sporting activities in Kogi schools to reduce unemployment and youth restiveness.
