In what has been described as a monumental breakthrough, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full approval to Salem University, Lokoja, Kogi State, to commence the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree programme.

The approval, which comes after a rigorous resource verification and accreditation process, marks yet another giant stride in the steady transformation of Salem University into a leading centre of academic excellence and innovation in Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.

Under the dynamic leadership of Professor Alewo Johnson Akubo, the Vice Chancellor, Salem University has witnessed unprecedented growth in infrastructure, academic expansion, and research innovation—culminating in the recent NUC approval of new academic programmes.

Beyond the MBBS programme, the Commission also approved the establishment of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master’s (M.Sc), and Doctorate (PhD) programmes in Biochemistry, Mass Communication, and International Relations, expanding the university’s academic horizon and research capabilities.

Speaking on the development, Professor Akubo described the approval as “a testimony to Salem University’s commitment to quality education, discipline, and the pursuit of global standards in knowledge delivery.” He attributed the success to the unwavering support and vision of the university’s Founding Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, whose faith-driven leadership continues to propel the institution to new heights.

According to him, the university’s strategic investments in laboratories, classrooms, libraries, and digital learning facilities played a key role in securing the NUC’s confidence for the commencement of the MBBS programme. “Our environment is conducive, our faculty is strong, and our facilities meet international benchmarks,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor further announced that admission into the new programmes will commence immediately for the 2025/2026 academic session, with application forms now available at the university’s admission office in Lokoja and online through its official website.

Prospective students seeking quality education with a moral and spiritual foundation have been encouraged to take advantage of the new opportunities. The university promises timely academic calendars, moderate fees, and an environment designed for both intellectual and moral excellence.

Salem University, founded on the vision of raising global leaders and change agents, has continued to distinguish itself through its unique blend of academic discipline, spiritual development, and community impact. The new MBBS programme further cements its position as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing faith-based private universities.

In recognition of the approval, the university community has expressed profound gratitude to God, describing the development as a divine fulfilment of long-awaited prayers and hard work. Jubilant staff and students were seen celebrating the news across the Lokoja campus.

The Founding Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, in a message of appreciation, dedicated the achievement to God, noting that “to God be the glory, Medicine and Surgery is now a reality at Salem University.” He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining the university’s vision of transforming graduates into global leaders who will make a difference in their professions and communities.

With this historic milestone, Salem University joins the league of accredited medical training institutions in Nigeria—ushering in a new chapter of academic excellence and national relevance.
