A civil society organisation, Confluence Shelter Point Resource, has called on security agencies to ensure prompt response to political violence before, during and after the forthcoming general elections.
The Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Amb. Dapo Olutekunbi, made the call at a world press conference organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja.
Amb. Olutekunbi, an experienced election observer, said it was unacceptable for perpetrators of violence to disappear before security operatives arrive at the scene.
According to him, violence must not be allowed to thrive in Nigeria’s electoral system, stressing the need for quick response to security threats.
He also urged the Inspector-General of Police to check cases of officers who report for election duty under the influence of alcohol, saying such conduct does not speak well of the Nigeria Police Force and undermines professionalism.
Amb. Olutekunbi however expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation by INEC, saying Nigerians are proud of the value addition brought by its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.
