The growing economic realities in the country have continued to place enormous pressure on vulnerable members of the society, particularly widows, persons with disabilities, orphans and low-income households.

Before now in many communities, survival has become increasingly difficult for those with little or no support system.

However, in Kogi State, Wife of the Governor, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has continued to demonstrate compassion and commitment towards improving the wellbeing of vulnerable citizens through sustained humanitarian interventions and empowerment programmes.

Leadership is often measured not only by policies and infrastructural development but also by the willingness to uplift the less privileged and restore hope to vulnerable groups within the society.

Since the assumption of office of the present administration, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo has remained consistent in her resolve to provide relief and support to disadvantaged persons across Kogi State.

The office of the First Lady is often viewed as ceremonial, but the Governor’s Wife has transformed the platform into a strong vehicle for social welfare, humanitarian service and economic empowerment.

Through her activities and interventions, she has continued to redefine compassionate leadership while touching the lives of thousands across the state.

Upon assumption of office, the Kogi First Lady identified the urgent need to provide targeted support for widows, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), women, children and other vulnerable groups who have over the years struggled with neglect and economic hardship.

This commitment gave rise to the establishment of the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative (OEI) in 2025.

The initiative was created as a platform aimed at promoting economic independence, social inclusion and sustainable empowerment for vulnerable citizens in Kogi State.

Through OEI, several intervention programmes have been implemented with direct impact on communities and households across the state.

One of the major groups that have consistently benefitted from the humanitarian gestures of Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo are widows across the state.

Recognizing the emotional and economic burden faced by widows, the First Lady has continued to prioritize their welfare through direct support and empowerment initiatives.

In October 2024, she hosted members of the Widows Association in Kogi State where she reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that no widow is left behind. During the programme, 1,000 bags of rice alongside a cash donation of five million naira were distributed to widows from different parts of the state.

Similarly, in February 2025, food items, clothing materials and cash support were distributed to 500 widows across the 21 local government areas of the state. This intervention also complemented agricultural support facilitated through the Renewed Hope Initiative of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

These efforts have continued to ease economic hardship among vulnerable women while restoring dignity, confidence and hope to widows in Kogi State.

Apart from widows, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo has equally shown strong commitment towards improving the welfare of Persons With Disabilities through various empowerment and support programmes under OEI.

In January 2025, over 500 mobility aids including wheelchairs, crutches and walking canes were distributed to Persons With Disabilities across the state. In addition, 25 persons living with albinism received specialized medical supplies including sunscreen creams while beneficiaries also received cash support of fifty thousand naira each.

The programme further witnessed the empowerment of 260 women with one hundred thousand naira each while 100 entrepreneurs received two hundred thousand naira each to support their businesses and improve their economic conditions.

For many beneficiaries, the intervention represented a turning point in their lives as several members of the disability community described the programme as the first of its kind in Kogi State.

Beyond economic empowerment, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo has also extended humanitarian support to correctional facilities within the state. In March 2025, she donated food items and relief materials worth millions of naira to inmates at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Okene.

The items distributed included bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, tubers of yam, bags of wheat, toiletries and assorted clothing materials, with special attention given to female inmates and nursing mothers. She also advocated quicker adjudication processes for inmates awaiting trial, emphasizing the need for humane treatment and justice.

Without doubt, the activities of the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative have continued to strengthen social welfare and economic inclusion across Kogi State. Through consistent interventions and inclusive programmes, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo has continued to demonstrate that leadership becomes meaningful when it directly impacts the lives of the people, especially the vulnerable and less privileged.

As the administration continues to implement its policies and programmes, many residents remain optimistic that the humanitarian vision of Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo through OEI will continue to expand in critical sectors such as women empowerment, healthcare support, agriculture and social welfare for the benefit of vulnerable citizens across Kogi State.
