The Kogi State University Kabba Women Network (KOSUK), in partnership with The Margaret Umeche Initiative (TMUI), has called for stronger women’s leadership and improved healthcare awareness during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration themed “Give to Gain.”
The event, held on Tuesday at the University Auditorium, brought together students, staff, and other stakeholders to discuss practical ways of empowering women in workplaces, classrooms, and communities.
Addressing participants, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. KIT Eniola, urged men to educate themselves on women’s health issues. “When men understand these needs, they become better supporters at home and in society,” he said.
Representing the University Bursar, Pastor Mrs. Florence Gbodi Alabi, PhD, Mrs. Opeyemi Ologun encouraged women to use communication as a deliberate tool for leadership. “Women often weaken themselves with phrases like ‘maybe I might be wrong’ or constant tag questions. That erodes confidence,” she said.
She further challenged participants to take active ownership of their leadership journeys in schools, boardrooms, and offices.
Similarly, a guest speaker and Senior Registrar at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, Dr. Oni S.O., explained that dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, remains a silent barrier to productivity for many girls and women. “The good news is that it can be managed through knowledge and proper care,” he said.
He also appealed to men to support the women in their lives through understanding and care.
The programme, convened by Dr. Grace Otitolaye, Chairperson of the KOSUK Women Network, and Margaret Umeche, Chairperson of TMUI, went beyond speeches to actionable drive.
Highlights of the event included the distribution of over 300 sanitary pads to female students, a cultural performance by the Theatre Arts Department, presentation of awards, and a panel discussion featuring student representatives from the University’s three faculties.
