As the world marks World Sickle Cell Day, Kogi State Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, FCA, has thrown a major lifeline to persons living with sickle cell disorder across the state, approving free health insurance coverage for all “Sickle Cell Warriors” in Kogi.
The landmark intervention is designed to lift the heavy financial burden that has long weighed on families managing the disease, while widening access to quality healthcare for those affected.
According to the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the initiative is a clear reflection of the Governor’s commitment to building a healthier society where vulnerable citizens are not left to fend for themselves.
“The initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to building a healthier society where vulnerable citizens receive the care and support they deserve,” the statement read.
Governor Ododo described sickle cell disorder as a major public health challenge confronting the state and called for stronger awareness campaigns, early diagnosis, proper disease management, and collective community support for those living with the condition.
The Governor was unequivocal on one point: healthcare access should never be determined by the size of a citizen’s pocket. “No citizen should be denied access to healthcare because of financial constraints,” he stressed, assuring residents that his administration will continue to prioritize policies and programmes geared toward the wellbeing of the people.
