SMEF Condemns Killing of Oyo Teacher

The Sanity Multi-Efforts Forum (SMEF), a civic advocacy group committed to promoting sanity, security, and social responsibility in Nigeria, has condemned in the strongest terms the abduction and brutal killing of Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, Oriire LGA, Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred on May 15, 2026, and resulted in the beheading of Mr. Oyedokun on May 17, represents not only a personal tragedy but a direct assault on Nigeria’s education system, its educators, and the future of its youth.

SMEF’s Position and Call to Action

This atrocity reinforces SMEF’s long-standing position that national resilience cannot be built on the efforts of security agencies alone. It requires a tripartite commitment between government, civil society, and an alert citizenry. In line with our Civic Security Advisory 2026/01, SMEF calls for:

1. Immediate Justice and Accountability: We acknowledge the arrest of six suspects by security agencies and urge the Oyo State and Federal Governments to ensure a swift, transparent investigation and prosecution. Impunity emboldens further violence.

2. Accelerated Rescue Operations: The safe return of the remaining abducted teachers and students must remain the top operational priority. We urge all levels of government to deploy every available resource toward this end.

3. Systemic Protection of Learning Environments: SMEF calls for the immediate implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative in vulnerable rural areas, particularly in communities adjacent to forests, reserves, and known transit corridors for criminal elements. No child or teacher should learn or work in fear.

4. Civic Awakening and Responsibility: In line with SMEF’s mission, we remind Nigerians that security is a shared duty. We urge communities to strengthen local intelligence networks, report suspicious activity promptly, and resist the spread of unverified information that undermines public order.

5. *Policy Reflection:* This incident underscores the structural nature of Nigeria’s security challenges. SMEF reiterates that sustainable solutions require continued investment in intelligence, inter-agency coordination, community policing, and youth engagement to deny criminal groups recruitment and support bases.

Our Commitment:

SMEF stands in solidarity with the family of Mr. Oyedokun, the government and people of Oyo State, and all Nigerians affected by insecurity. Our objective remains to promote a culture of proactive safety, ethical citizenship, and collective vigilance.

We believe that by upholding sanity in public discourse, demanding accountability, and acting responsibly at the community level, Nigerians can deny violent actors the space to destabilize our society.
