The Vice Rector of Saint Kizito Minor Seminary, Idah, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Opaluwa, has urged graduating secondary school students to embrace their God-given uniqueness rather than engage in unhealthy competition, saying every individual is created with a distinct purpose.
Opaluwa spoke during a Mass of Thanksgiving marking the graduation of the 2025/2026 set of Presentation Model Secondary School, Ukpaba, in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He said true fulfilment comes from discovering and developing one’s own gifts, not from comparing oneself with others.
He explained that every person possesses qualities that set them apart, and that these differences should be seen as opportunities to glorify God and contribute positively to society.
Drawing an analogy from biology, he noted that even identical twins, though from the same zygote, possess unique traits — a reflection, he said, of how every individual’s identity and purpose are uniquely designed by God.
The cleric urged the graduates to glorify God through their talents, abilities, appearance, education, family background, and other gifts entrusted to them, stressing that success is measured by faithfulness to one’s purpose rather than by rivalry with others.
“Unnecessary competition breeds hatred and makes you lose focus,” he said, cautioning the students against envy and lifestyles driven by rivalry.
He further encouraged them to cultivate gratitude and contentment, telling them: “Be grateful for who and what you are and be content with God’s hand upon your life.”
Opaluwa also warned the graduates against pursuing quick wealth through questionable means, stressing that lasting success is built on integrity, hard work, discipline, and respect for moral values.
He noted that wealth acquired without regard for consequences often comes at great personal and societal cost.
The priest advised the graduates to preserve the friendships and relationships built during their school years, describing them as valuable networks through which God often brings opportunities and blessings.
The Mass also celebrated Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Thomas and Rev. Fr. Michael Ogala, both of whom served at the school during their priestly formation. Addressing the priests, Opaluwa charged them to remain faithful to the ideals of the Catholic priesthood, referencing the biblical example of Aaron and his sons to urge them toward commitment, unity, and service to the Church and humanity.
The event drew students, parents, staff, clergy, and well-wishers in a celebration of academic achievement and spiritual growth.
