Kogi Varsity Insists on 170 Cut-off Mark for Admission

Kogi State University, Kabba has insisted on 170 as minimum cut-off marks for the university admission against the 140 benchmark earlier announced by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Kehinde Eniola stated while speaking at the school premises during an end of one year programme to mark the end of second semester.

Professor Eniola maintained that reducing the cut off mark below 170 is not in line with the standard of the Institution, saying he will not give in to the demands of those calling for reduction in the cut off mark.

The Vice Chancellor noted that though it is expected for the institution to agree with the 140 score to attract many students, the move will be against the aim of the school in setting high academic standards.

Many person have accused us of setting our admission score high, but our aim is not to generate revenue but to produce standard education we can be proud of.

“Setting 170 as admission benchmark is not too high. We understand that as a new institution, we should be concerned about getting many students, but lowering our standard just to attract students will only give the school revenue, and supporting mediocrity.

He further states that “Our motto is ‘Beating the best, to become the best”. We can only achieve that if we set a high standard from the onset. There are institutions that will not even admit students with less than 200 scores, even while JAMB pegged it at 140″

Prof. Eniola however advised those who could not meet up with the 170 score but interested in the new university to apply for ‘A’ level course, stressing that such students would be given priority in the next session.

He also revealed that the University will be admitting 1,750 out of the 3500 candidates that picked the university as their first choice for 2024/2025 academic session.
