The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, Kogi State Chapter, has condemned the unfortunate and disturbing attack on Government Secondary School, GSS, Olowa, in Dekina Local Government Area, which occurred on Tuesday, 14th July, 2026.
A statement by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Emejeh Ogwu Sunday and Secretary Comrade Mohammed Ada Sule respectively decried the latest development as unfortunate and barbaric.
According to the statement, the attack which led to the abduction the Principal of the school, the NECO Examination Supervisor posted to the school, and two female students were by armed criminals is worrisome due to repeated attacks on schools across the State.
“We are pained that this is happening less than two months after similar attack on GSS Iluke-Bunu in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area where one of our members was gruesomely killed, and we are yet to recover from the shock” it stressed.
According to the statement, the barbaric act is a direct assault on the education sector and a grave threat to the safety and well-being of teachers, students, examination officials, and every law-abiding citizen, describing it as unacceptable.
ASUSS expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and stands in solidarity with the affected school community and prayed for the safe and unconditional release of all those abducted.
The Union however commends the proactive nature of the State Government in mobilizing security personnel to immediately tackle the situation and rescue all who are abducted without further delay.
It further restates ASUSS demands for urgent and practical measures to guarantee the safety of teachers and students across all secondary schools in Kogi State through enhanced security presence in vulnerable schools, improved intelligence gathering, rapid emergency response mechanisms, sustained collaboration with local communities to prevent further attacks and perimeter fencing of schools amongst others.
“ASUSS wishes to make it abundantly clear that the lives of teachers cannot continue to be placed at risk while they discharge their patriotic duty to educate the nation’s children. We therefore urge the Kogi State Government to present a clear and actionable security plan for the protection of secondary schools across the state as the safety of our members is non-negotiable”
The Union called on parents, community leaders, civil society organizations, and all well-meaning Nigerians to join it in demanding decisive action to protect schools and preserve the lives of the nation’s future leaders.
