NTDA DG Hails Ekinrin-Adde Festival as Model for Nigeria’s Cultural Tourism Drive

The Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA),  Mr. Ola Awakan has described the Ekinrin-Adde Cultural Festival as a living example of how indigenous cultural celebrations can drive Nigeria’s tourism development and economic diversification agenda.

Speaking at the 2026 Ekinrin-Adde Cultural Festival, themed “Preserving Our Heritage, Promoting Tourism, Building Prosperity,” the NTDA boss extended his Felicitation to the traditional institution, the people of Ekinrin-Adde, the Kogi State Government, and all stakeholders who have sustained the cultural heritage over the years.

He described the festival as more than a celebration, noting that it represents Nigeria’s history, identity, values, and collective spirit, stressing that culture remains the foundation upon which sustainable tourism thrives globally.

According to him, the Ekinrin-Adde Festival serves as a living museum of traditions, customs, folklore, indigenous knowledge, music, dance, cuisine, and craftsmanship that have been preserved over generations, describing these cultural assets as valuable economic resources capable of creating jobs and attracting investment.

The Director-General said that as Nigeria continues to diversify its economy beyond oil, cultural tourism offers one of the most sustainable pathways for economic transformation, social cohesion, and community development.

He listed the festival’s significance to include preserving indigenous heritage, promoting unity and peaceful coexistence, engaging youths in cultural education, catalysing local economic growth, and showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity to the world.

The Governor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to states through the Renewed Hope Agenda, and urged residents to sustain peace, unity, and hard work as pillars of lasting development.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, represented by the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, donated ₦50 million to the community, appealing for the funds to be used strictly for their intended purpose.

Prof. Zulum urged other communities to emulate Ekinrin-Adde, stressing the need for well-meaning sons and daughters to support community projects.

In an interview, the Olu-Adde and paramount ruler of Ekinrin-Adde, His Royal Majesty Oba Anthony Bamigbaiye, CON, said unity of purpose remains key to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

He commended the Ododo administration’s ongoing fight against insecurity in Kogi State and described the proposed State Police as commendable, while stressing the need to involve traditional rulers in the process.

The monarch said the annual celebration brings indigenes together to give thanks and mobilise resources for community projects, since government alone cannot provide everything.

He noted that funds realised over the years have financed key projects, including Ijumu land’s first town hall, the first secondary school in Ekinrin-Adde, and the community’s palace hall.

Oba Bamigbaiye, however, expressed concern that insecurity had kept many indigenes away from this year’s celebration, and called for unity among all Okun people, stressing that there can be no development without peace.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Prince Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, stated that this ceremony is the 33rd edition, aimed at the Cultural and Tourism Potentials of the country

According to Prince Babajide, the Community has a lot of Projects to execute, appealing to well-to-do individuals to support.

He maintained that apart from celebrating the Culture and Tradition of Ekinrin Adde, the event was an opportunity to honour friends of the Community, who have supported and succeeded in their respective careers.

He used the occasion to pay glowing tributes to the member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke for his efforts in attracting development to the community, describing him as a builder of men and women.

The Governor also commissioned two 18-seater buses donated to the community by Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, as part of his continued support for the development of his ancestral community.

  • Nigeria’s 19-Year Kidnapping Crisis Demands New Security Doctrine – SMEF President

Nigeria’s 19-Year Kidnapping Crisis Demands New Security Doctrine – SMEF President

The Sanity Multi-Efforts Forum (SMEF) has described kidnapping in Nigeria as a 19-year-old crisis rather than a new security challenge, calling on the Federal Government to adopt a fresh, measurable security doctrine.

In a statement signed by its President, Prince Dan Olaitan Dada, SMEF traced the trend from the 2007 kidnap of Mrs. Eweje, sister to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, through the 2014 Chibok abduction, the 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls’ kidnap, and the 2021 Greenfield University attack, noting that while targets have changed over the years, the method has remained the same.

NSCDC’s Infrastructure Overhaul, Welfare Push Earn SMEF’s Commendation

The group said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu now has the opportunity to move Nigeria from reactive responses to a coordinated doctrine involving the Federal, State, and Local government tiers, working alongside traditional rulers, communities, and the media to deliver visible results in towns and communities.

SMEF stressed that any new security framework must prioritise human dignity and social welfare, including trauma care, rehabilitation, and economic protection for victims, given the link between poverty and insecurity. It also called for citizens to be treated as security assets through confidential, technology-driven channels for sharing intelligence without fear of victimisation.

The organisation further urged the strengthening of the rule of law and institutional capacity through intelligence-led policing, modern surveillance, swift prosecution, and improved welfare for security personnel.

SMEF affirmed its readiness to collaborate with the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Interior, the Police, the DSS, and the NSCDC, pledging support through policy advocacy, welfare programmes for affected families, and civic and legal awareness initiatives.

  • Karimi Extends Olive Branch to Rivals, Calls for United Front in Kogi West

Karimi Extends Olive Branch to Rivals, Calls for United Front in Kogi West

Sen. Sunday Steve Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has called on party members to set aside the rivalries of the recently concluded primary election and unite behind a common purpose ahead of the general election.

In a statement of appreciation issued on Sunday, the Senator declared that “there is neither victor nor vanquished,” stressing that the party’s primary contest had ended and a greater assignment of unity and service to the people now beckons.

Senator Karimi began by extending appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to strengthening the party and Nigeria’s democracy. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his role in uniting and stabilising the party in Kogi State, and commended the immediate past Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for his sustained contributions to the party’s growth.

He further appreciated the National Chairman, the National Working Committee, and party leaders and stakeholders across Kogi West, including Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, as well as Local Government Party Chairmen, Ward Executives, and party members for their commitment throughout the process.

The Senator paid special tribute to his co-contestants in the primary — Senator Smart Adeyemi, Hon. Samuel Bamidele Aro, Alhaji Tajudeen Bismillahi (Simidex), Hon. Folaranmi Onirinwa, Hon. Abubakar Ola Zakari, and Chief (Dr.) Doyin Eshanumi Ibikunle — describing their maturity and restraint as a reaffirmation that leadership is measured by character rather than outcomes alone.

Acknowledging that political contests often stir strong emotions, Senator Karimi apologised for any offence caused by his words, actions, or omissions, or those of his associates, during the primary. He said he had equally forgiven every misunderstanding directed at him, noting that the party’s future mattered more than yesterday’s disagreements.

He urged party members to shift from the rhetoric of the primary to a language of reconciliation, unity, and shared purpose, stressing the need to close ranks and present a united front for the task ahead, including securing victory for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Beyond politics, Senator Karimi emphasised that the greatest obligation of party leaders now lies with the people of Kogi West, calling for a shift in focus from campaigns to development and from competition to collective community advancement.

Reaffirming his commitment as Senator, Karimi pledged to redouble his efforts towards uniting the people of his district, carrying every stakeholder along, and ensuring no community is left behind in the pursuit of progress. He also pledged his support to all tiers of government in Kogi State in delivering good governance and improving citizens’ welfare.

He concluded by describing the party as “one party, one people and one common destiny,” declaring that while the primary is over, a greater assignment of unity and service has now begun.

  • NSCDC’s Infrastructure Overhaul, Welfare Push Earn SMEF’s Commendation

NSCDC’s Infrastructure Overhaul, Welfare Push Earn SMEF’s Commendation

The Sanity Multi-Effort Forum  (SMEF) commends the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for the visible transformation taking place across its formations, from the National Headquarters to State Commands nationwide.

Under the leadership of the Commandant-General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, the Corps has made infrastructure renewal, staff welfare, and community-centered service central to its mandate. The commissioning of strategic projects at the National Headquarters, and a clear directive for replication across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory, has established a new benchmark for institutional repositioning.

This national direction is being reflected at the sub-national level. In Kogi State, the Command Headquarters in Lokoja has undergone a comprehensive facelift with the addition of a new sentry post, quarter guard, provost office extension, perimeter fencing, and an overall upgrade of facilities, a development acknowledged by the State Government. In Ebonyi State, the Command has been elevated to a special status, with improvements to its operational facilities and ongoing plans for a dedicated clinic and senior officers’ mess. Kwara State Command has distinguished itself through free healthcare outreaches to communities, in line with the Corps’ broader humanitarian and Corporate Social Responsibility posture. Similar investments in infrastructure and welfare have been recorded in Gombe, Lagos, Benue, and other Commands, illustrating a Corps-wide commitment to excellence.

SMEF, a civil society organization registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, is guided by its mandate to promote good governance, social welfare, human dignity, civic awareness, and the rule of law. Within this remit, we view the Corps’ investments as essential to improving working conditions for personnel, strengthening operational capacity, and building public trust in security institutions.

We therefore affirm SMEF’s readiness to collaborate with the NSCDC at the National, Zonal, and State levels, within constitutional and civic bounds. Areas of collaboration will include civic education, community sensitization, and advocacy to ensure that improvements in infrastructure translate into improved service delivery and the protection of human dignity for Nigerians.

The State Command examples cited are illustrative of a broader national pattern. SMEF encourages the Corps to sustain this momentum and to extend the reach of both its infrastructure and humanitarian programmes to more communities across the country.

  • SMEF Backs JRB Reforms, Says Nigeria Can Finally End Tax Duplication

SMEF Backs JRB Reforms, Says Nigeria Can Finally End Tax Duplication

Nigeria’s long battle with multiple taxation may be turning a corner, if the early outcomes of the Joint Revenue Board’s reforms are sustained, the Sanity Multi-Effort Forum, SMEF, has said.

In a June 26, 2026 policy report, the civil society organisation argued that the JRB framework directly addresses the cost drivers it has documented for years across Nigeria’s transport and trade corridors.

The report, “From Multiple Taxation to One Nation,” frames the reforms as validation of SMEF’s mandate on economic sanity, accountability, and protection of commercial operators from illegal extortion.

SMEF pointed to four laws signed on June 26, 2025, as the foundation: the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act, Nigeria Tax Act, and Nigeria Tax Administration Act.

Together, the laws create a single legal structure to coordinate how revenue is administered across federal, state, and local tiers, a gap SMEF says has enabled duplication and abuse.

The organisation particularly welcomed the JRB’s electronic-only collection mandate. By removing cash and unauthorised roadblocks, the directive targets what SMEF calls “roadblock economics” — the practice of repeated levies on drivers and traders outside the law.

SMEF has since issued guidance to transport unions and fleet operators: reject cash demands from unauthorised task forces and escalate such cases to the Legal Departments of State Internal Revenue Services.

A central element of the reform is the Model Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law, which collapses over 60 separate state and local charges into nine approved heads.

They are: Capital Gains Tax, Personal Income Tax, Property Tax, Road Tax, PAYE, Business Premises Levy, Harmonised Levy, Motor Vehicle Licence, and Daily Ticketing.

SMEF confirmed that over 15 states have domesticated the model. It is currently in consultations with the 36 State IRS and the FCT IRS to ensure compliance, while recognising only levies with clear legal backing.

The group said it has received written responses from Kebbi, Kwara, Zamfara, and Kaduna IRS, and expects wider alignment.

Another reform SMEF backed is the Consolidated Haulage Levy and Vehicle Tagging System 2026. Under it, haulage operators make one payment, at loading or offloading, and receive one digital receipt valid nationwide.

SMEF said the system should end multiple haulage charges across transit states, cut logistics costs, and reduce price pressures on consumers.

It also welcomed the rollout of over 100 million 13-digit Unified TINs and the JRB’s online PAYE calculator. The organisation will embed both tools in its nationwide training for drivers, SMEs, and transport unions to improve compliance literacy.

SMEF described its role as a bridge between government and citizens on revenue matters. Copies of its report and explanatory charts will be shared with state finance commissioners, IRS chairmen, FRSC, Police, VIO, and other agencies to support implementation.

Signing off the report, Convener Prince Dan Olaitan Dada said sustained coordination between government and civil society can reduce illegal revenue practices and create a more predictable environment for business.

  • ₦3bn AI Centre, New Buses, 100 Laptops: FUL VC Ibileye Lists Wins After 100 Days

₦3bn AI Centre, New Buses, 100 Laptops: FUL VC Ibileye Lists Wins After 100 Days

During the 2026 Ekinrin Adde Day celebration, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Solomon Gbenga Ibileye spoke with Journalists on his achievements in Four months in office.

Q: Good morning, sir. Between February this year and now, what has changed at the Federal University Lokoja?

A:Thank you very much for the opportunity to interact with you. I was inaugurated on 16th February 2026, and here we are four months down the line. So, what has changed?

We could say maybe nothing tangible has changed, but there are intangible changes, and those intangible changes are the foundation for the transformation of the university that I envisage.

What has changed intangibly is a renewed understanding of our commonality as an institution. We have now renewed our bond to work together. The unions — the academic staff unions, non-teaching staff unions, technologists, and every other person — have come to the realization that we need to work together. Because if we don’t have that understanding, we will not be able to deploy the limited resources of the institution for maximal impact.

So, we are building partnership, understanding, and cooperation among our people.

That said, we have made some modest achievements, even in concrete terms. For instance, when we got there, morale was low and there was very low presence of welfare services. I felt that one way to motivate people is to show genuine interest in their welfare.

So we put in place certain mechanisms of compensation. Through the support of friends of the university, we secured 100 computer laptops deployed by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ikeja Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Finance. We distributed them to our staff. The computers were few, but the gesture was phenomenal because it is assisting our colleagues to maximize their productivity.

We have also intervened in transportation. Since the foundation of our university, no dean had been allocated a vehicle. We have 17 deans, so we felt let’s start from somewhere. We deployed four cars, which we distributed on the basis of ranking. It is a phased thing.

We have also increased the number of vehicles in our transportation fleet. We purchased two coastal buses. If you know how difficult it is to commute between our two campuses, you will understand that anything we do to ameliorate the problem our staff and students face in terms of transportation is significant. Those two buses have significantly reduced the strain.

What has changed again is that we have secured accreditation for some of our courses within this short period. We have also secured resource verification status for 14 high-impact programmes, including Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Criminology and Security Studies, Social Work, and related programmes.

Within this short period, we have been able to attract a large quantum of funds from funding agencies, including TETFund and the Federal Government’s Needs Assessment. But the most significant is the allocation of ₦3 billion to the Federal University Lokoja for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences. That will be the hub of AI and cybersecurity training in the whole of North Central Nigeria. Kogi State connects 10 states and the entire North Central, meaning everybody in all geopolitical zones can easily gravitate towards that centre.

Q: In the next six months, what are we looking at?

A: We are looking at consolidation and externalizing the efforts we are making. Part of our significant achievements is the internationalization of FUL. We have reached out to universities in Egypt — Badr University in Cairo, University of Cairo, and the National Research Centre in Cairo — to complement our efforts. Where we have gaps in laboratories and equipment, we can link our students and lecturers to their laboratories virtually.

We have also reached agreements with institutions in South Africa, Canada, and the UK, and we are extending our reach to universities in China and Australia.

In the next six months, we envisage infrastructural development. The road infrastructure at FUL is pathetic, so we want to reconstruct the road to connect our main gate to the Agbaja end of our land so we can move the main gate and reduce accidents.

We are also partnering with funders for our transportation system. Under the Needs Assessment, we expect five 18-seater electric vehicles and five electric tricycles to be delivered. With private investors, we are looking to bring 50 mini electric buses to the university to comprehensively address transportation challenges.

We are also working to ensure all our programmes are ready for full accreditation, and we are transforming classroom infrastructure — furniture, laboratories, staff offices. Under the 2026 TETFund allocation, we have funds for faculty buildings, so in the next six months we will see more buildings.

On hostel development through public-private partnership, I am confident that at least two units of 1,200 bed spaces will spring up in FUL in the next six months. We have about 30,000 students but only 1,000 live on campus. Moving at least 50% on campus will reduce social tension with host communities and also reduce road accidents.

Q: As a member of the auspicious Omu Atata, what is your message on this occasion?

A: Ekinrin-Adde is a community of distinction, a community of “firsts”. It has produced great men and women who have contributed to local, state, national, and international development. Every Ekinrin-Adde Day is a platform for those God has blessed to come back and demonstrate love and gratitude.

This year, some of our illustrious sons and daughters have been honoured with the Omu Atata Hall of Fame. The message Ekinrin-Adde is preaching to the world is: appreciate your people and whatever contribution they have made. Recognition encourages them to do more and enlists others to contribute to community development.

I am glad to be home again this year to witness the 2026 Ekinrin-Adde Day. It has been fun all the way. You cannot come to Ekinrin-Adde and not enjoy the season. People are welcome from all over the world to participate in the activities.
