The Governing Council of Greenland University, Jalingo, Taraba State, has appointed Professor Ojo Sunday Fayomi as the institution’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor, effective August 1, 2026.
A Professor of Mechanical Engineering specialising in Mechanical Metallurgy, Fayomi previously served as Director of Academic Planning at Bells University of Technology, Ota, where he oversaw institutional planning, quality assurance, accreditation and ranking initiatives.
He had earlier served as Dean of the College of Engineering at the same institution.
He also chaired the university’s Corporate Affairs and Scopus Units, driving research visibility and international academic collaborations.
A native of Iyara, Kogi State, Fayomi holds qualifications spanning a National Diploma from The Polytechnic Birnin Kebbi, an HND from Federal Polytechnic Idah, a B.Eng from Bells University of Technology, and Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa, alongside a postgraduate diploma from Olabisi Onabanjo University.
He is an Extraordinary Professor at Tshwane University of Technology and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg. Over nearly two decades, he has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, six books and 30 book chapters, holds two patents, and has supervised 25 PhD and 42 Master’s students to completion. His work has attracted over 9,500 citations and funding from bodies including South Africa’s National Research Foundation.
He has received over 70 national and international honours, including recognition among Africa’s Top 50 Researchers and the World’s Top 2% Scientists.
The Governing Council said it was confident Fayomi would provide the strategic direction to position Greenland University among leading institutions in Nigeria, Africa and globally, wishing him success as he takes up the role.
Fayomi is married to Dr Gloria Uche Fayomi, with whom he has two children. He is fluent in Yoruba, Nupe and English.
